It's that time of the year again for flu immunizations. I have received an update regarding Flu Shots and EGG-ALLERGIES. First, always check with your Doctor or allergist before taking a flu shot if you are allergic to EGGS! (Throat swelling, hives, faintness, difficulty breathing, tongue tingles, etc.) According to the new recommendations from the Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, an egg allergy should not keep anyone from getting this season's flu vaccine. Anyone with a history of suspected egg allergy should first visit an allergist or immunologist for testing and diagnosis, but most likely can receive the vaccination.
People with egg allergies previously were told not to get the influenza vaccine because it contained egg proteins and could trigger an allergic reaction. Recent research, however, showed that the vaccines contain only tiny amounts of egg protein and the vast majority of people with egg allergies did not experience adverse reactions to the vaccine.
People with egg allergies should take precautions such as vaccine skin testing, a two-step graded dose (10% of the appropriate dose, followed by 90% after a brief observation period), or stepwise desensitization. (1.)
But, remember as I recommend, "when in doubt, check it out!!" Meaning, call the Doctor who treats your allergies or medical doctor before receiving the vaccine to get their approval!
